Dried fruit has been an essential part of the human diet for thousands of years. Ancient cultures such as Mesopotamia, Egypt and ancient Greece used dried fruits for their nutritional quality, longevity and convenience in storage and transportation.
Fruits such as figs, dates, apricots and grapes were sun-dried and eaten on their own or used in recipes.
What do you know about the use of dried fruits accords in perfumery ?
There are several reasons why perfumers use synthetic molecules and natural raw materials with fruity facets to recreate the scent of dried fruit. Firstly, it's difficult to extract essential oils from dried fruit.
Synthetic molecules are generally produced in laboratories from raw materials. Once the basic molecules have been created, they are then modified to recreate the desired olfactory profiles.
To bring a dried fruit effect to a composition, perfumers have created bases that approximate the natural scent of dried fruit. Bases are complex accords that enable fragrances to incorporate olfactory notes not found in nature.
The Prunol De Lair base is an emblematic example of these accords, bringing fruity facets of apricot and candied plum to compositions.
Dried fruits perfumes generally belong to the amber or gourmand olfactory family. They tend to have a rich, deep olfactory profile, with sweet, spicy, woody and sometimes slightly smoky notes.
The olfactory profile of a dried fruit fragrance can vary according to the fruits used. For example, a dried apricot fragrance may have sweet, slightly floral notes, while a dried fig fragrance may have green, earthy notes.
As a result, certain dried fruit notes are particularly popular. Here are some of the most frequently reproduced scents:
• Prune: Prunes have a rich, fruity scent that can bring depth and warmth to a fragrance. The prune note is often used in oriental and gourmand fragrances. It is often provided by bases such as Prunol or natural raw materials such as essence of davana.
• Fig: The fig is often recreated in perfumery for its green, milky character. It is often the leaf that is interpreted, with its earthy, crunchy and creamy facets. It is often used in fresh, green and fruity fragrances, as well as in woody scents.
• Apricot: Dried apricot is one of the most interpreted dried fruits in perfumery, as it can be contributed by natural raw materials such as davana essence, a luscious, fruity and candied material, or osmanthus absolute, which brings floral, fruity, luscious and very animalic notes. The apricot note is often used in fruity floral fragrances.
• Date: Dates have a rich, syrupy, honeyed scent. The date note is often used in oriental and gourmand fragrances for its depth and enveloping effect.
• Bitter almond: Although technically a stone and not a dried fruit, bitter almond has a sweet, slightly bitter scent that is often used in perfumery. It adds naturalness to dried fruit accords and is frequently used in gourmand and oriental fragrances.
Dried fruit notes are often combined with vanilla, spices like cinnamon or cardamom, woods like cedar or sandalwood, and resins like benzoin or labdanum. These accords help enhance the richness and depth of the dried fruits, while adding complexity and balance to the overall fragrance of dried fruits perfume.
