There’s a real trend for slow cosmetics and skin care when it comes to beauty and the perfume world is no different! Fragrance fans now want natural, clean, vegan and cruelty free perfumes that are gentle on the skin and don’t harm the environment. Is it possible to fit so many criteria into such a small bottle? In any case, it’s a bold challenge that some fragrance houses have been only too keen to accept. To find out more about green fragrances, read on!

What’s so special about natural perfumes?

What does a natural and organic perfume have that others don’t? Read on and we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the latest must-have natural and clean perfumes.

Natural and synthetic perfumes: what are the differences?

Perfume was originally an all-natural product when it was created. The first expert perfumers didn’t have access to petrochemicals. The industrialization of perfumery from the 19th century onwards played a significant role in perfumes becoming more artificial: this led to some of their natural ingredients being replaced by synthetic ingredients.

Perfume was originally made from long-distilled essential oil blends, but these have gradually been replaced by a synthetic ingredient: alcohol. Why? Quite simply because natural raw materials can be up to ten times more expensive than synthetics and some fragrance notes only exist as synthetic ingredients.

By creating new scents and combining them, perfumers have managed to bring unique synthetic fragrances to life. Well, OK, but what about natural perfumes?

Today, fragrance houses like Bon Parfumeur are making a considerable effort to get back to basics. By carefully choosing the best ingredients of natural origin, they manage to create green and incredibly addictive fragrances.

Clean compositions

Better for people and the planet, natural perfumes are a great choice! They don’t contain any controversial substances (and their long names!) like BHA, EDTA and phenoxyethanol. In addition to blacklisting certain ingredients, they’re made without any dyes or filters: a beautiful natural perfume doesn’t need them! The color of natural perfumes can change over time. However, this is totally normal and doesn’t affect the perfume’s scent or how long it lasts.

Natural perfume = ingredients of natural origin?

Green fragrances are made almost exclusively with ingredients of natural origin. Sometimes, they contain a very small (and safe!) amount of synthetic ingredients. This happens when a fragrance note doesn’t exist naturally or when a natural ingredient is too allergenic (yes, this can happen!).

For example, some scents (marine scents and mute flowers) simply have no natural equivalent. In this event, natural perfumes use a synthetic ingredient instead of a natural one to ensure a quality fragrance. In addition, certain synthetic additives are essential to “set” the fragrance and make it more stable over time: it’d be a shame to do without them, wouldn’t it? At Bon Parfumeur, our eaux de parfum are made with a minimum of 82% natural ingredients and some even boast up to 97%! Naturally!

Environmentally friendly packaging

Given their focus on the environment, natural perfumes are often sold in sustainable packaging. With bottles made from 100% recyclable glass and outer packaging from virgin and recycled pulp certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), Bon Parfumeur’s packaging really is excellent!

Our recommendation? Choose refillable bottles so that you can enjoy a fragrance without encouraging the production of even more packaging.

Fragrances that are better for you

Dermatologists and allergists agree that it’s better to use cosmetics made from natural ingredients. Beauty and body care products containing chemicals are a real health hazard in the long term because they penetrate the skin’s barrier. To avoid endocrine disruptors and other synthetic and petrochemical products, focus on the labels: silicones, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, formaldehyde, surfactants and even dyes and UV filters should not be included in the formula of a clean fragrance or clean beauty products. To enjoy an incredible scent in total safety, it’s best to opt for a clean perfume.

Organic perfume: understanding green perfume

Is a natural perfume organic and is an organic perfume always natural? It’s hard not to feel a little lost when buying perfume. Read on to find out what’s true and what’s not.

Certification for organic perfumes

Don’t be fooled: a natural perfume isn’t necessarily organic. An organic perfume is made using organic essential oils. To receive COSMOS (COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard) certification and to be recognized as a certified organic, natural cosmetic, a perfume’s composition must meet certain criteria:

  • - A minimum of 95%¹ of the plants it contains must be organic.
  • - A minimum of 20%² of organic ingredients must be included in the formula for products that aren’t rinse-off.
  • The ECOCERT logo on the packaging also makes it possible to immediately recognize an organic perfume.

    Organic perfume vs natural perfume

Organic products are everywhere, but does organic certifications guarantee a perfume’s quality? You’re going to be surprised but we owe it to you to tell the truth!

  • - Organic perfume is nonsense. Although it’s tempting to fall into the trap of various marketing gimmicks, it’s important to put things into context. For a perfume to be certified as organic, a minimum percentage of its ingredients must be organic: in other words, the remaining ingredients can come from anywhere else.

Conversely, a natural perfume may not be recognized as organic, but its composition may be excellent.

In short, when choosing a perfume, focus on the ingredients in the fragrance rather than looking for an organic logo!

  • - Natural perfume: much more than a trend, it's a lifestyle you’ll want to embrace every day! To enjoy an incredible scent in total safety, go green with your fragrance.
