SUMMARY

What does raspberry mean?

The raspberry is the fruit of the raspberry bush, a member of the Rosaceae family. The fruit can be cultivated or grown wild. Its name was first mentioned in the 12th century. The raspberry is a small fruit made up of some forty tiny carpels. Each one is filled with juicy pulp and its outer surface is covered with microscopic hairs. This gives the raspberry its velvety appearance. Egg-shaped and conical, raspberries have a sweet flavor with a hint of acidity, with varying degrees of intensity depending on the variety.

In the beginning...

Raspberry is a delicious and popular fruit that has been enjoyed for centuries. Its history dates back to antiquity, and its origins are associated with various regions of the world.

Raspberry is native to Europe and Asia, where it has grown wild for thousands of years. The mountainous regions of Western Europe, notably the Alps and the Carpathians, as well as parts of Central Asia, are considered the main areas of origin of the raspberry.

The first mentions of raspberries date back to Greek and Roman antiquity. The ancient Greeks believed raspberries had medicinal properties and used them therapeutically. The Romans discovered its benefits and began growing it in their gardens. In the Middle Ages, raspberry cultivation spread throughout Europe thanks to the monks who helped propagate it. Wild varieties were cultivated in monasteries and castle gardens, and monks played a key role in selecting and improving varieties.

Raspberries were subsequently introduced to North America by European settlers in the 17th century. It quickly adapted to temperate climates and began to be cultivated in the British colonies. Over time, different varieties were developed to suit local conditions.

Today, raspberries are grown in many parts of the world, including Europe, North America and Asia. Raspberry varieties include red, black and yellow. Each variety has its own distinct characteristics in terms of color, taste and texture.

DID YOU KNOW? Greek legend has it that the raspberry, prized by the gods of Olympus, originated on the slopes of Mount Ida in Crete. Its name, Rubus idaes, literally meaning "the bramble of Ida", is derived from there.

Raspberry in perfumery

In perfumery, the scent of raspberry is not created through the pure fruit, but recreated through accords, which are harmonious combinations of ingredients designed to evoke the raspberry's characteristic fragrance. The raspberry is a delicate and perishable fruit, making it difficult to extract a pure essential oil from its berries. In addition, the natural smell of raspberries can vary according to various factors, such as the variety of raspberry and growing conditions. So, to achieve a consistent, stable raspberry scent in a fragrance, accords are used that combine carefully selected natural and synthetic ingredients.

As a result, these raspberry accords can include synthetic molecules specifically designed to replicate the scent of this fruit, as well as other complementary ingredients to reinforce and enrich the composition. Thanks to this approach, perfumers can create fragrances that realistically and harmoniously evoke the irresistible, distinctive raspberry fragrance, offering a pleasant, long-lasting olfactory experience.

The raspberry's olfactory profile is characterized by its fruity, sweet and slightly acidic aroma. Here are some of the olfactory notes that can be found in the scent of raspberry:

Fruity: Raspberry has an intense fruity fragrance, reminiscent of berries and red fruit. Its aroma is often described as soft, sweet and juicy.

Sweet: Raspberry has a pronounced sweet fragrance, reminiscent of confectionery and desserts. This sweetness contributes to its appeal and gourmand character.

Acidic: Although raspberry is sweet, it also has a slight acidic note that gives it a pleasant balance. This acidic note is reminiscent of citrus fruit or slightly acidic berries.

Fresh: Raspberry can have a subtle freshness in its fragrance, sometimes evoking the sensation of picking fresh fruit from a garden. This fresh note contributes to the invigorating sensation associated with raspberries.

Floral: Some raspberry varieties, such as black raspberry, can have floral nuances in their fragrance. Delicate floral notes can mingle with fruity aromas, adding an extra dimension to the raspberry scent.

Raspberry cultivation

Raspberry bushes thrive in temperate climates. They require well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, and a sunny or partially shaded position. Plants require regular watering and appropriate pruning to maintain shape and stimulate healthy growth. Once established, raspberry bushes produce abundant succulent fruit, which can be harvested as they mature.
